āļø Medical School Personal Statement

šļø The Statement
I wrote my personal statement in 2011 which is quite a while ago - nonetheless the process, content and advice remains the same.
This is your only real chance to showcase your creativity and uniqueness within your medical school application process. Many will have secured similar grades, similar UCAT or BMAT scores to you but only you will be able to express in 4,000 characters why they should invite you to interview.
šÆ The Aim
At the very least you should aim to demonstrate the minimum qualities and experience needed to be a doctor. This includes the usual qualities of an interest in medicine, being caring, organised, empathetic and so forth. You should however aim to be unique in your presentation of the information.
šļø Structure
There is a loose structure that the vast majority of personal statements I have read follow:
- Introduction with captivating first sentence to grasp the attention of the admission teams
- Work Experience showcase your experience in the field and demonstrate why you are sure you'd make an excellent doctor
- Academic Experience showcase your academic prowess beyond your grades
- Extra-curricular Activities showcase your time management skills and interests beyond academia
- Conclusion that will ensure they remember you
šļø The Key
There is really only one key to success. That is multiple drafts. Your first few iterations will be terrible and it's important to accept this and begin. I suggest that you do in the region of 7-10 drafts. Start early and give yourself enough time to keep changing it.
I started in early July and by the October deadline I had a personal statement that I am still proud of till this day. I ended up producing 11 drafts. The final few had very minor changes.
š©āš« Feedback
Ensure to get feedback from a range of people. I showed my personal statement to pretty much any authoritative figure in my life at that time. This is another reason why starting early is so important, to ensure you have enough time to get feedback and make the adjustments necessary.
I showed the statement to my GP, my work experience consultants, my form tutor, my english teacher, my history teacher and of course my parents, siblings and friends.
šŖ Show Not Tell
These were probably the most important three words my english teacher gave me. Ensure that you do not just narrate the skills and activities that you have been engaged in but show why doing said skills and activities is relevant to a career in medicine and why you above others deserve the chance.
š° Purchase My Medical School Personal Statement
I have linked my personal statement below as an example. Please don't plagiarise it, you'll get caught and get into lots of trouble.
I use the money to help fund the website and YouTube channel - but of course if you cannot afford it, drop me an email on thatmedicc@gmail.com and I will send it to you for free.
